Sunlight streamed in between the bedroom curtains, and dust particles floated on the brilliant sunbeam that bounced off the mirror, hitting Matt’s face. He woke shivering, despite the warmth of the room and the doona over him. Momentarily lost in his surroundings, he kicked the covers off, wiping at the sweat beading on his chest and stomach. As if it had been hobbled and broken, his mind finally kicked into action, and realising where he was his breathing slowed, but only a little. Feeling as if the room was spinning, he sat on the side of the bed and then stood on shaky legs. Movement made him feel worse, but he had to do something, anything, rather than sit still. He had to keep his mind busy, distracted. Unsteady, he used the wall for balance, waiting for a wave of nausea to pass, while ready to dive towards the wastepaper bin in the corner of the room if the need arose. But then the seasick sensation eased a little, although the dizziness stayed and kicked into full force. Licking his dry lips, he wiped the sweat from his forehead. He squeezed his eyes shut and took a few deep breaths. Although it was his first day waking up without a hangover, this was way worse. He felt as though he’d been run over by a bus, and then it had reversed back over him for good measure. The horrible sensations coursing through him would only stop with the help of a stiff drink, but come hell or high water, he was going to push through it stone cold fucking sober.

Shuffling down the hallway as he tugged on the singlet he’d retrieved from the floor, he then headed into the bathroom to toss some water onto his face and brush his teeth. Then, feeling a little more human, he padded into the kitchen, squinting as golden light flooded every surface. Standing at the fridge, he pulled the door open and tried to conjure up an appetite. Food would be his saviour right now, but he was afraid that if he ate, he would have something in his stomach to throw up. Seeing the bowl of fresh eggs, he grabbed it and placed it on the bench, along with the carton of long-life milk. He’d make some scrambled eggs. Flicking on the jug, he took a mug from the cupboard and got to making himself a stand-his-spoon-up kind of coffee when the familiar pounding of a kangaroo caught his attention. Dropping the second spoonful of sugar in his cup, he stared out the kitchen window in time to see a huge red roo bound past, with a female and joey in tow. In the shady gums lining the back fence, dazzling lime and yellow rainbow lorikeets darted between the branches, and his mum’s prized chickens pecked beneath, getting their fill of worms and insects. The scene brought a much-needed smile to his face and helped to centre him. The vastness of Rosalee
